Take a look at the GoodGuys event and you will be assured of a steady stream of street curbs, 50s and 60s cruisers and customs, muscle cars and classic trucks. You will often see something else standing out in the crowd: old four-wheel drive and SUVs.
The proliferation of classic off-road and off-road trucks has been growing for at least a decade and has certainly accelerated in recent years. The first generation Broncos are the hottest original ticket and the most popular, but the ’67 -’72 K5 Blazer has recently been strengthened. The same goes for Square-Body Blazers, Jeeps, International Scouts, Toyota Land Cruisers and other SUVs as well as four-wheel pickups. You could say vintage off-roaders are on the rise.

They see the crossover interest between muscle cars and older off-roaders as a natural extension of their motoring experience in the 1980s. “My biggest thing is that if I didn’t have a Trans AM, I would drive a K5,” Hall says.

Mike Keller of Badger Works says classic four-wheel drive, like the K5 Blazer, is a family affair. This is the vehicle you can imagine loading the family (and the dog) and having fun.
Seth Burgett launched Gateway Bronco in 2016 to build product-line-style vintage Restomad Broncos after discovering shortcomings in both OEM-spec vehicles and existing custom offerings. He thinks vintage off-road vehicles are popular because of the widespread desire for people to go out and enjoy the world. “You’ve had this outdoor move before Covid,” says Burgett, and this year’s move is simple as people find ways to spend more time outside. “They need something cool to drive inside.”

The relative popularity and popularity of these vehicles went unnoticed by the other major builders of our hobby. And Jim Martin’s ’78 J10 Jeep – last year’s fuel curve picker at Southwest Nationals – is a hot commodity among fans outside of the classic route.
Another key factor in the popularity of vintage SUVs is the way they are perceived by other members of the household – especially wives. “It’s a family thing,” Keller says, adding that owners of classic blazers or wagons are more likely to load the family to get ice cream or camp. Dave Hall says consumers who buy blazers and four-wheel-drive drives have the same demographics as their muscle car clients. “We recently traded the ’69 Camaro at Jimmy,” Hall said. “He was ready for something completely different.
