5) Sand It evenly – The most important and long-lasting method of working on the body is getting a smooth surface before you start applying the paint. Start with 400-grit sandpaper or coarser and sand too much grout; smoothes faster if it is not difficult at all. If you are sanding a large area, you may need a sanding block to make sure you do not have to scratch the wavy surface. You complete when the entire area is sanded and smooth to the touch with 400 levels of paper.
6) Clean the area – Clean the repair area with a clean cloth and mineral water to remove any residue of dirt or oil from your fingers. The putty body should be so thin that you can see the metal and paint it on many areas. Let it dry, then wipe once more with a tack cloth to remove the lint. Any fingerprints, oil stains, or specks of dust can cause smudges, fish eyes or any stains, so cleaning is the key here to get rid of.
7) Apply primer – Spray the primer on the treated area, on bare metal and at least an inch around it to allow mixing. For best results, spray the entire area in a thin layer, then reapply a few minutes later with a slightly heavier layer. Let the primer dry for the recommended time before sanding.
8) Wet sand and repeat – Sand the area only primed with 400 grit sandpaper until smooth and the edges of the treatment are mixed in the same color. Wash, dry, and spray another coat of primer. Switch to the higher grade of sand paper, 600, and wet and prime sand. Two or three coats of primer are usually enough to complete the repair.
