They’re wildly popular, and kids continue to rave about them, even though they’re overpriced—earphones cost anywhere from $180 to $400 a pair, with headphones starting at $100 (Monster Cable, the company behind Beats Curtains, puts out heat for labeling its cables into the abyss).

Even at these prices, the Beats aren’t very good. I’ve been testing different models of Beats for several years now – the ‘Studio’ and ‘Pro’ folders and sets of headphones – and I’ve found that every pair I’ve worn has been substandard. There are headphones that offer much better sound for the same money or more. Making a deep mystery, Beats is based on construction in a turbulent history, you are lucky to squeeze out of them in a year.
And they are everywhere. People love them. I don’t understand this reason why I don’t work in marketing. However, as much as I am about Beats – and popular headphones in general – I’m curious about the new Bluetooth. I try to welcome every opportunity to be impressed, see the light, and convert, so when a pair of new wireless Beats land on my desk, I make them tremble.
While these $280 headphones are instantly recognizable as Beats, there are a few notable differences. First and foremost, wireless are Bluetooth headsets, so they rely on a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone, tablet, or PC to transmit sound. (There’s not even a way to plug in a mini cable, which is weird.) There are also buttons under the ring on the right earcup. By pressing the various points around the circle, you can adjust the volume, move through the track, turn on the power and control the Bluetooth pairing. In the center of the ring is a silver play/pause button adorned with a large red “b”.
Like other Beats cans, the gear frames are almost entirely plastic, except for the hinges where the headphones fold up to fit in carry-on luggage. The hinges are metal, but they are quite flimsy and do not inspire confidence.

I’m not happy with the sound. Throbbing as in chest. Low levels are on the surface of hardness, excitement and weakness. The rest of the sound field is pumped up to compete with the lowest level wall, but it’s all out of place. The highs are dull and the mids lack freshness, making the vocal chords and making the instrument sound muddy, unnaturally processed. The gentle voice has no room to breathe, and even the tiniest details like hi-hats and snare hits are all splash and bang.
A big caveat is that these are Bluetooth headsets, so the sound is compressed to go wirelessly from the source to the speaker. But when comparing them to other similarly priced Bluetooth headphones — the Sennheiser MM 400s ($260) and the AKG K830s ($250) — it’s clear that Beats has great taste. While these other models can produce sound in a natural way, the Beats are over-embellished and roll off a very aggressive pitch.
If you’re into loud, loud sounds, Beats can blow you away the first time you put them on. But after 20-30 minutes I just want it to be over. I listened for an hour every day for a few weeks, and at the end of each session I had to pop back into my trusty ATH-M50 headphones and reset my chi before moving on with my day.
One thing I don’t have to do is refill them often. Battery life is very impressive – the Beats Military survived several days of regular use between charges. In addition, the Bluetooth connection took place in different environments. In the office and around the house, I experienced only a slight drop in signal, and only when I walked about 20 feet away from the source.

I’m having some issues with the design. The scarf is tight, like a brace, and since these are earplugs, the leather straps will squeeze the uncomfortable ear. Also, the control ring is unfathomable. When I think my fingertips have found the right sound to turn up the volume, I press it and – oh – we’re on to the next song. This happened over and over again, to the point where I had to take them out and watch them to remind myself where the individual controls were.
I finally made some phone calls. The sound quality is so-so on both ends of the line, but I guess they work in compression.
These Beats would be my second or third choice among Bluetooth models in the $150-$200 range, juxtaposing the comfort and complexity of Bluetooth, the travel-friendly design against the poor sound quality, and the amazing ergonomics.
Great battery life. The beautiful folding design keeps things compact. They look pretty cool. Your boss thinks you and LeBron James are best friends.
