How To Fix Keyboard Key

Disaster has hit your favorite keyboard and the S key is starting to drop or not match your finger strokes. What is your occupation? Did you throw away that keyboard and buy a new one? Did you take it upon yourself to fix it? Considering that landfills are flooded with discarded technology, allowing your keyboard to work is not only a financially responsible option, but also an environmentally friendly one.

Most standard keyboards have integrated keys, soldered to the motherboard. Not much can be done about integrated locks. The only way you can change keys without desoldering from the board is by hot-swapping the keys on the keyboard. A good example of a hot-swappable keyboard is the Drop ALT mechanical keyboard.

This keyboard is raw hardware, allowing you to buy the keys you like and replace them if necessary.

If the keyboard is not hot-swappable, there is very little chance you can repair a damaged key without knowing how to handle the soldering gun and motherboard.

How To Fix Laptop Keyboard Not Working

However, you are not all out of luck. One of the most common reasons why a keyboard stops correctly is not a mechanical failure, but dirt and other impurities. That said, your first attack plan might be to use a vacuum to suck up all the mess on the buttons.

To remove keys safely from your keyboard, you need the right tools. This tool is a keyboard key eraser (Figure A).

How to remove the keycap is simple: insert a cable between the keys so that they wrap around the key you want to remove until it slides along the edge of the key (Figure B).

If you don’t want to buy a lock puller, you can make your own. I found that both paper clips did the job, although not easily. Open two paper clips and fold one end into a small hook (Figure C).

How To Fix A Broken Key On A Standard Keyboard

Once the two paper clips are bent, place them between the buttons and fasten them on opposite ends. Once both are attached to the key, pull up on both clips to remove the keycap.

If this is a hot-swappable keyboard, you can use the other end of the keycap puller to pull out the keys (Figure E).

If your keyboard isn’t hot-swappable, you’ll most likely be able to clean the keys and vacuum up any remaining debris. Be sure to clean the keys with isopropyl alcohol when the computer is off and the keyboard is removed.

After cleaning the button, let it dry, replace the cover and move on to the next button. Do this until you have cleaned all the buttons and replaced the cover.

Missing Or Broken Keyboard Keys

Hopefully, after you take care of it, your keys will work just as they did when you bought the keyboard. If not, and this is not a hot-swappable keyboard, you should take the keyboard to a specialist who knows how to replace soldered keys, or buy new hardware.

This way, you can access the keyboard keys to replace, clean, or know when it’s time to replace the keyboard.

If your laptop keyboard doesn’t work, there’s probably nothing wrong with that keyboard. However, your laptop may not work due to a software issue. Answer: The first thing we do is to determine if there is a software issue to boot the laptop from the flash drive that Ubuntu has on it. Ubuntu is a popular version of Linux that competes with the Windows operating system. If the keyboard is not working because there is a Windows issue, we know this is why because the keyboard will be working when Ubuntu is loaded. If the keyboard is typing correctly using Ubuntu but not on Windows, the next step is to determine why it doesn’t work on Windows. The most common cause is a faulty keyboard driver.
