I started teaching myself how to solder in hopes of making my own DJ controls in the near future. I had a lot of questions when starting out with what kind of iron I needed and how to apply solder to a device. Know that I understand the basics well, I thought I’d answer my initial questions for everyone here!
How To Fix Headphones Wires
This is important. I know that a new headset/headset can be very cheap, so if you’re looking for a quick solution that doesn’t require the investment of time, patience, and some tools, this isn’t for you. My goal is to teach soldering in a hands-on and hands-on activity aimed at beginners while also solving a common problem.
How To Repair Your Frayed Or Broken Headphone Wires
I find learning how to fix a broken headset is ideal for learning how to solder for a number of reasons. Broken headphones are common, so either you or someone you know will need some practice anyway. Moreover, they are already corrupt; no damage, no damage if you can’t fix them.
Also, beyond the soldering equipment that you will have or use a lot in the future, the only component you need to buy is the headphone jack, which you can get easily and cheaply. Everything else should be in your home.
Another great thing about starting this project is the durability of the headphone jack. You can burn it, solder it, desolder and otherwise forge it, and it will still work if you do things right. Perfect for learning! Expensive electrical components that can break or get damaged if you do something wrong is not where you want to start.
Cut off the old headphone’s jack as close to its base as possible. Next, remove about a quarter of the protective sheath to expose the wires.
How To Repair Busted Headphones
The colored strings are the vocal cords. Usually Red is correct, but this is not always the case as there is no worldwide standard for wire color (DERP). If you complete the project and your left/right stereo field changes, you will know how to mix the cables. If this is large, you can go back and reverse it by removing the solder joints, cleaning them, and repeating the process.
The color of the wires is actually a protective coating. We need to remove that sheath to ensure proper connection between the wire and the new jack. There are several ways to do this. I think the simplest way is to burn it and then remove the remaining soot with a fine sandpaper. However, you can just go with sandpaper or burn the coating and use your fingernails or something similar to remove the soot.
Important: Now make sure you put a box/protective box on the wire, the threads will be facing the plug as you can’t do this after soldering the wires on the plug. -new.
Now. Let’s take a look at the headphone connector. We will use a Type-Ring-Sleeve (TRS) connector. You want Type-Ring-Ring-Sleeve (TRRS) for headsets, but as I said, we can still use a TRS plug to secure phones to any set!

If you look at the diagram below. We will connect the red wire to the ring, the blue/green wire to the tip and the ground to the sleeve.
We need to feed the appropriate cables through the appropriate holes. Now you can do them all, but I suggest doing them all one at a time because they don’t want to mess up.
Start with the ground wire(s) and feed from the inside through the sleeves. If the edge is loose, you may need to bend the exposed wire in half. You can also try cutting it with a wire cutter. After screwing the hole in the sleeve, it’s time to solder.
If you haven’t already, you must connect the soldering iron to the power supply to start heating. Each iron will take a different amount of time, but if your iron doesn’t have a finished light handy, 4 minutes should do the trick! This tool will be extremely hot like molten metal, so be very careful.

Important: There will be some smoke when you actually solder. Make sure you have a fan that blows or sucks the fumes away from your face as it is toxic.
Important: Look at the wire while you wait for the iron to reach the correct temperature. You must ensure that the wire continues to touch the sleeve itself during, during and after the soldering process. This link is everything!
Once your iron is hot enough, take it and apply it to the wire and plug it in for a second. Then touch the solder to the iron, plug and cable at the same time. You may need to hold it there for a short time. You will see the solder bubble and some smoke coming out. Keep touching the solder with the iron until it covers the wire and plug. You don’t want too much, because if you plug the enclosure in then it won’t go inside.
The applied solder should dry very quickly. Wait a minute as the plug will be hot and try to pull the cord gently. It should not move.

Now, it might be a good idea to test things out. Let the plug cool down, plug it into your phone and play some music. Then take the remaining two wires and touch them to the end of the loop and the splices. You can hear the sound from the phones.
If you hear anything, you will be very excited!! Now all you have to do is repeat the threading and soldering steps for the remaining wires.
If you can’t hear sound, run the remaining two wires securely and move the ground wire. If this is giving you a sound, it means you lost your connection while soldering the floor and you will have to heat the solder and remove it with the solder pump or wick. Then you need to try again.
Once you’ve soldered all your wires to the plug and tested to make sure everything works, you should catch yourself in the back. The rest is easy!

Make sure all wires fit inside the plug as we need to tighten the strain relief clamp. Also, make sure that the audio cables do not touch the ground wires. You can do this with your fingertips or with a set of small pliers.
