In the past I have tried and failed to get Beats headphones to get me through the rigorous review course. But we are fortunate to have an old friend who works in Beats, who was more than happy to provide us with what we needed. And my friend knows I’m more likely to be louder because of the connection.
We must also take into account that I have nothing to lose by giving this one a good or bad review. We do not sell anything here and Beats does not advertise on. I care more about being loyal to the tens of thousands of loyal readers than keeping a single producer happy. So let’s get to that.

Start with my darling packaging. That’s simply too much of it. Beats love to make a statement, and while it provides the feel-good factor and air of abundance, it is nothing more than an expensive dumping ground and not the way to reduce the carbon footprint or impact on natural resources. Mocked over.
Inside the lavish box are the headphones (more details later), a DJ-friendly, partially coiled cable, an Apple-friendly TRRS-equipped straight cable with volume controls and play / pause button, a push-fit 1/4 ″ – adapter and a very tangible clamshell case. The box also contains a stack of printed instructions, warranty and marketing tricks, as well as a fairly large sticker for you to declare your loyalty to Beats on your expensive laptop.
Given the consumer heritage, aesthetics are crucial to Beats. And the mixers are not sloppy in the area either. The brand is strong, but not overwhelming (yes, at least not on the blacks I have here). But appearance is just as important as technology, but fortunately the functionality is not compromised by style choices.
The mixers are elegant, curved and free of sharp edges, and due to the 40 mm driver-on-ear design, they are quite discreet on your head. And even if the flowers are bold (for example, red cables), the overall aesthetic is minimalism. The vast majority of DJ headphones are generally underestimated, and it’s good that the Beats Mixrs continue on this path as well. But if you want to make more of a statement, you can take white or red.
Beats By Dr. Dre Releases Ammunition Designed Mixr Headphones
The construction is minimal and avoids the hinge-tasting designs of yesteryear that would normally lead to almost immediate breaks. The combination of metal and dense plastic work well together to add weight, and the overall high-precision finish is suitable for the overall feeling of quality. There are also no cracks, rattles or obvious weaknesses. You guys have all seen how hard I am when I test, and the Beats Mixers withstood every bend, stretch and twist I threw at them. To break them to really break them. This does not mean that they will not break, but it will be for a long time that weaknesses can occur.
The cables are Beats specific – both are red rubber with straight connections on one side and right angles on the other. However, the DJ cable is more robust and due to the construction both are almost impossible to confuse. However, I have a problem with the resistance of the headphone cable in the headphone – it does not lock or screw and will probably come out if your cable is stuck in your equipment. However, I’m still not sure if it’s good or bad. I do not fall out, but I just wish it had more resistance to come out. And with the adapter being a pressure gauge, and the plugs small, you can finally leave the adapter in the mixer when you leave.
On a related note, each headphone has a socket, which gives you a choice of which side to connect and also to the daily chain for other headphone users. A nice touch.
Review: Beats By Dr. Dre Mixr Headphones
When it comes to spare parts – it looks like you could buy new cables if you break or lose them. However, foam earphones do not seem to be available. So unlike the Sennheiser HD25s you would naturally compare them to, if they broke, you’re probably looking for a new pair.
To begin with – I listened to a mix of House, Hip Hop, Classical and Jazz through a mix of iOS devices, audio interfaces and directly from vinyl to get the best distribution of resources and qualities to a to get overall picture.
But I hate to write this part because it is a completely subjective opinion, based on personal preferences and individual audience characteristics. One thing is a fact – they are hard. The 40mm drives deliver a large amount of volume, and even when running, they do not appear to deform. I tried to find the actual numeric specifications to see how it compares to others but amaze myself if it’s almost impossible to find, not in the box, on the Beats website or anywhere else. And even though I know people make purchasing decisions based on scientific data, I do not and especially when it comes to headphones, I use my ears. So I was pretty glad that this information was hard to find.
If I were to describe the sound in meaningful words, it would most likely be “full” and “alive”. DJ headphones are usually bass driven to try to simulate what the dance floor is hearing, and some Beats Mixrs have a lot of bottoms. But it’s as if all frequencies have also been shifted up, making the Mixers excellent for monitoring the mix, but perhaps giving a different picture of what’s happening on the floor. I would definitely not recommend them for production, but to DJ and by the way listen to your collection, they are pretty good, although I found that depending on what I was listening to, I needed a break from the often full of sound.

NOTE: I knew Drew would throw a lot of science and numbers at me, so to those who care, it seems like the treble response on MIxrs is very similar to HD25, but since the base response on the Mixers is smaller than HD25s, they look plates. But as Drew rightly points out, your ears hear what they want to hear.
If you read any of my previous headphone reviews, you will know that I prefer over-the-head headphones. They tend to seal a little better against my head than over-the-head headphones, and this is still the case with the mixers as well.
