Apple’s updated Powerbeats Bluetooth workout headphones take what’s great from the company’s true wireless earbuds, adds longer cable and battery life, and a lower price tag.
Fix Beats Headphones Nyc
The new £ 129.95 Powerbeats replaces the older, more expensive Powerbeats 3 with redesigned earhooks, cable guide and Apple’s H1 chip, which simplifies Bluetooth connectivity and gives Apple headphones all the same features as AirPods visible on the iPhone.
Monster Sues Beats For ‘sham’ Partnership
The tip of the earcup fills your ear canal, while the hook rotates behind the ear to hold it in place. Photo: Samuel Gibbs / The Guardian
The design of Powerbeats is very simple. The body of each earbud has a single-sided earcup with a traditional silicone ear tip that slides into the ear canal. The other end has a looped hook behind your ear that restrains it and points it back instead of in front of your ear as it did in the past.
It is a very reliable, easy and comfortable model. The earhooks can be bent and adjusted to fit, and once twisted, they won’t come off no matter how much you shake your head.
The cable that wraps around your neck is better than many headphones I’ve tested, but like other neckbands, it can drag on clothes and get caught in things. Within 15 minutes of running down the street and turning my head to see if there were cars and people, the cable clearly dragged down the side of my neck, which can be frustrating for anyone running too far. At least the cable won’t remove the headphones from your ears.
How To Pair Beats Headphones With A Phone Or Computer
The Powerbeats weigh a total of 26.3g and are sweat resistant, so you don’t have to worry about a bit of rain. They come in a small canvas bag, but are durable enough to fit in the pocket of a gym bag. Ear hooks can obstruct the mirrors, but it’s best to rotate the sunglasses.
The controls are simple but unbiased. The left earcup has a power and pairing button, while the right has a volume rocker, a multifunction Beats logo button for playback controls, and a Lightning port for charging.
It’s nice to have assigned volume settings for active headphones. The controls work well on Android and iOS smartphones, tablets, and Apple Watch, but Powerbeats has some compatibility issues with other devices.
Volume control does not work on Garmin watches, a problem caused by the latest software update for Beats headphones. The same thing recently broke the volume control in PowerBeats Pro. Garmin and Apple say they are making repairs. The volume control and music pause feature does not work when connected to Spotify on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2.
What’s Your Answer To This?
Bluetooth connectivity is great on a variety of devices, from MacBook Airs and various Windows 10 PCs to iPads, iPhone SE, OnePlus 8 Pros, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flips.
Apple’s H1 wireless chip, the same system that powers the PowerBeats Pro, AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro, supports direct pairing with all Apple-made devices, multi-device switching, and the firm’s hands-free voice assistant, Hey Siri.
The Beats app on Android provides some functionality, such as pairing headphones, displaying the battery level when turned on, and managing various settings.
It’s noteworthy that the Powerbeats themselves can’t afford to play music, and are just Bluetooth headphones.
Beats Powerbeats Review: Apple’s Cheaper Bluetooth Fitness Earbuds
The sound of Powerbeats is very similar to Powerbeats Pro: energetic, forward-sounding, perfect for listening while exercising. But they’re also surprisingly good overall headphones, with decent noise isolation, no video lag or lip-sync issues, and great vocals for podcasts and most music genres, especially the pop.
Those looking for classic or more sophisticated sounding headphones may be disappointed, but these are essentially workout headphones.
You need a Lightning cable to charge the headphones, which can be inconvenient if you don’t use another Apple product. Photo: Samuel Gibbs / The Guardian
Powerbeats is capable of up to 15 hours of continuous playback, which is straightforward in my testing. Definitely enough for an ultra-marathon or a week of running and exercising. The headphones are charged by a Lightning cable. One is included in the box, but any cable used for the iPhone or iPad will work. A quick five minute charge is enough for approximately 40 minutes to an hour of playback.
Designer Of Beats Headphones Prototype Discovers There’s No Free Lunch
Apple doesn’t provide the number of charging cycles expected from the Powerbeats battery, but it can replace and usually fix headphones.
In comparison, Powerbeats Pro £ 219.95, Apple’s AirPods £ 159, AirPods Pro £ 249, Samsung’s Galaxy Buds+ £ 159 and Jabra’s Elite Active 75t £ 189.99.
They sound beautiful, have a forward and lively tone, and are perfect for tunes that inspire you to hit the pavement or lift weights. But they sound enough for general use, especially if you listen to pop music often.
Ear hooks are the best in the business – lightweight, comfortable, adjustable, and rock solid when bent. No matter how hard you try, they won’t come out, and with IPX4 sweat resistance, they should survive anything other than sinking in the pool.
Beats Solo Pro Review: Killer Headphones With One Major Flaw
However, they suffer from the problems of traditional neckband headphones. Even if the cable is properly inserted behind the ear, it can be dragged behind the neck or caught in clothing. Some people prefer cables because it’s harder to lose headphones so you can wear them around your neck when not in use, but if that’s not the case, the more expensive Powerbeats Pro is better. Both Beats headphones suffer from volume control and playback issues associated with popular running watches from Garmin and others.
Powerbeats are very well made workout headphones. At £ 130 they’re not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Advantages: secure installation, good cable routing, solid connection, volume control, good sound, long battery life, fast pairing with iOS or Android, sweat resistant. Cons: Expensive, not suitable for mirrors, cable can be dragged, no volume or playback control on the left earcup, no pause on removal, no support for aptX or higher, issues with Garmin devices.
