Last week we had this post about tea tree oil. This oil has all the unique benefits and why it is so effective. I mentioned at the bottom of the post that you can also use tea tree oil for cleaning!
Most of my family has respiratory issues, so I don’t use bleach to clean ION at home. It is toxic, strong and can damage tissues. I only use bleach to keep mold off cut flowers or pumpkins.
Vinegar is also not a product I use around my master bathroom because of all the natural stone we have (vinegar is great for ceramic or plastic bathroom surfaces). Be sure to check out this post for the damage vinegar can do.
This is usually ONE treatment of the mold area. I used this amount to treat all the mold areas shown in the photos. It’s also great for cleaning dirt mixed with mildew!
Solved! What Kills Mold In The Home Once It’s Identified?
I’m adding this because several readers have written to me that they have NOW run out of the brand I linked to in the recipe above. Here are some other inexpensive tea tree oils I use. Both had the same results.
Remember, always take care of pets. Most essential oils are toxic if pets lick the area. Make sure your pet doesn’t stay put after cleaning with this.
The reason tea tree oil is so effective at eliminating mold and mildew is because of its high antimicrobial activity. I touched on this in this post, but it’s what makes this oil so unique. Mold and mildew are active ingredients, so to properly clean them you need something that kills it. Tea tree oil makes it fast!
If there is a mold stain that has been there for years, the mold can be absorbed into the surface. It can actually damage the surface and not clean it! There is an area in my shower that has mold from the previous owners that I have not been able to clean because it has damaged the surface. That part should be replaced.

Solved! What kills mold? Determining the right products and procedures to completely remove mold can be difficult. Once mold is identified, this is what kills it.
Answer: When a homeowner discovers mold in their home, it is important to treat it as soon as possible to prevent the spread of mold spores. Mold can cause several major health conditions and, if left unchecked, can cause wood surfaces to rot. Mold loves damp places like basements, kitchens and bathrooms. Under the right conditions, black mold can develop in just 24 to 48 hours.
Many safe ingredients used to kill mold are simply found around the house. This kills the mold and stops it from spreading in the home.

Bleach is a household staple due to its ability to disinfect and thoroughly clean most surfaces. Bleach can kill a mold that lives on a surface; however, the chemical structure of the bleach makes it impossible to reach the porous surfaces where the mold membrane lives. This means that even after the surface is cleaned, the mold will grow back.
In addition, whitewash can also become a food source for certain types of mold once it’s in, causing the mold to spread, digging deeper into an area so whitewash can’t reach it. Therefore, it is recommended to use only bleach to clean small amounts of mold growing on non-porous surfaces.
To kill a mold with whitewash, use a solution of one part whitewash to 10 parts water. Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area, as bleach is a corrosive chemical that emits strong fumes. Apply the solution to the mold with a spray bottle or sponge and scoop. There is no need to wash the surface after application, unless it is in a ready-to-eat area.

Vinegar is a powerful substitute for bleach and other harsh chemicals when it comes to killing mold. The acidity of vinegar can penetrate porous materials and remove the mold membrane beneath most surfaces. Use plain, distilled white vinegar to kill mold because it is the most acidic. Some homeowners may even use vinegar directly on their walls or linoleum floors as a cleaning technique to prevent mold growth.
To kill mold with vinegar, add distilled white vinegar directly to a spray bottle without diluting it. Spray the affected area with vinegar and let sit for an hour to allow the vinegar to penetrate the surface and kill the mold at the root. Wash the surface with warm water, spray again with vinegar and dry.
Hydrogen peroxide is an antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial solution used to prevent infection in wounds, so it is found in most home remedies. However, it is a strong mold, especially with solutions containing more than 3 percent concentration of hydrogen peroxide.
Hydrogen peroxide is best used on porous and non-porous surfaces, including clothing, bathrooms, and even kitchen appliances. However, since it is bleach, test the area before cleaning to make sure the material will not fade.

To kill mold using hydrogen peroxide, put an undiluted 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution in a spray bottle. Using a spray bottle, saturate the mold area with the solution and let it sit for 10 minutes. During this process, the hydrogen peroxide will kill the mold. Scrub the area with an abrasive sponge to make sure the entire area is free of mold and allow the hydrogen peroxide to fade the mold stain. Finish by using a clean cloth to dry the area.
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a more natural way to kill mold. It is found in most homes and is a natural cleaner that is safe for children and pets. Baking soda is also a deodorizer, which means it can help remove moldy odors as well as mold itself. Baking soda is often used in conjunction with vinegar to clean mold, as both can kill different types of mold.
To kill mold using baking soda, put 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle and shake well to incorporate. Spray the mold with the solution and use a scrub brush or sponge to remove the mold. Rinse the surface with water and finish with another layer of soda solution and allow to dry.
Although essential oils are a popular health product, they can also treat black mold. Tea tree oil is specifically an insect repellent, natural deodorant and antiseptic, used in everything from deodorants to common household cleaners. Using tear oil is one of the safest options for killing black mold. To kill mold with tea tree oil, combine one tablespoon of the oil with one cup of water and shake. Spray the moldy area with the solution and leave it for an hour for the moldy roots to penetrate. Finally, use a cloth to wipe off the excess mold. Be careful if you have pets, as essential oils can be harmful if ingested or sprayed.

Lemons are another form of natural mold removal due to their high acidity. They can be used as bleaches, deodorants, cleaners and antiseptics, making them powerful molds. To kill mold using lemons, juice three to five lemons and pour them over the mold. Let sit for 5 minutes before cleaning.
The above methods can deal with the smallest molding problems. However, if you have several molds on the walls or a large area covered in mold, it is best to contact a professional to ensure that the mold is properly and effectively treated.
