About 6 years ago I bought my first house and interestingly enough, one of the first problems I saw when I first went into dents in the rounded / convex corners of the front entrance.
To my (now) wife’s great dismay, I never fixed the dent. But when it was time to sell the house, I realized (or rather I was told) that I needed to repair the dents in the rounded corners of the drywall if I wanted to sell my house for its full value. And to make matters worse, it was considered necessary only 2 days before we would put the house on the market.

When I searched for articles on how to “repair a rounded plaster corner”, I was surprised that there was not a good step-by-step article with clear instructions and pictures to make the repair process crystal clear. All I could find in the top search results were poorly written instructions without pictures to make the steps clear and obvious. Most of them also talked about cutting out the metal bulge and replacing it – which is too much work for such a simple problem.

So this article is my attempt to fix that void in the interwebosphere, along with some extra information about my workout.
As a first attempt, I took some glitter and placed it in the dent to fill it. I did not grind away the color of the metal corner tip because I thought the glitter would stick to the color better than the metal.
I also decided to fix the dent, I would fill the dent (unfortunately I did not take a picture), wait 24 hours for the glitter to dry, then sand it down with a piece of sandpaper in the same movements as I polish a shoe to achieve a rounded corner.
Unfortunately, after 24 hours, when I started to grind the glitter, after a few pulls back and forth past the dried outer crust, the glitter immediately came loose in a couple of lumps, all the way to the bottom of the dent. When I sanded, I could not easily say that the putty was still wet, because wet putty looks a lot like dry putty – especially when it has lots of sanding dust on it.

Because the dent was so deep, the glitter did not dry out outside the outer crust and was still soft inside. I thought I had to let it dry for a week before it solidified all the way, and I did not have that time.
So I went to the hardware store to get some supplies. While I came across a tough guy who talked about his job in the construction industry. So I approached him, interrupted him rudely, and politely asked if he knew anything about repairing curved plasterboard, a rounded corner.
His first thought was to do the same thing as some of the articles said – cut out the damaged area and buy a new aluminum (or other metal) bump and cut it out to fit the space. Then place it and cover it with dirt.
It was too complicated a decision for me. I did not want to cut the wall and also cut the metal, let alone cut it to perfect size.

So we started talking about clay and how good it only comes in big 25lbs bags and it ended with him telling me about DryDex with a drying time indicator, a pink stain that dries to white so you know when it will dry up.
This looked good to me because I decided to apply the glitter to the dent layer by layer, and blow dry each layer. Since the glitter changed from pink to white when it dried, I had a fantastic visual indicator when the glitter was dry and I was happy to apply another layer.
I also thought that by applying over the putty I would get better adhesion to the paint on the first layers because it solidifies quickly under the hair dryer (as opposed to the putty drying slowly to the paint under the dry surface of my first thick application putty where air does not come in).
ASID: I’m not sure the last paragraph is good science. I’m sure it’s quite wrong, but that’s part of how I convinced myself to go down this road. I also thought that if it did not work, I could just scrape off all the glitter so the wall would not be worse than before. If I had gone down the cut road, I could have made things worse and increased my costs when I finally needed to call a professional.

So I bought the pink one and went home. I borrowed a hair dryer from a neighbor (we had just moved into a new house, so this old house was empty) and got started.
And I was also happy to note that once the packaging has dried, it adheres well to the color in the dent.
But the drying process, even with a hair dryer, took longer than desired; about 3-4 minutes for a thin layer. My mind began to calculate during the dull periods of drought and I calculated that at my current rate it would take at least 2 hours per dent. And there were 4 big people. Eight hours would be too long!
I thought that by creating small lumps and ridges I increased the surface area, which would allow me to apply a thicker layer and dry it faster.

I timed the process and it really seemed to improve. My new estimate was that I could patch a deep dent in about 30 minutes
That was acceptable. Two hours and another hour (a total of three hours) to grind them and paint them was not ideal, but it was enough for me to fix dents that day and be ready to show the house.
So I filled all the holes with a little padding so I could grind them down with my non-proprietary shoe polish technique. (It does not appear in the picture because I had to hold the camera with my other hand. To do my simple technique, just hold the left and right sides of the sandpaper and rub back and forth while polishing the shoe.)

By using only a small amount of gypsum clay or putty can fix small notches and dents in the gypsum. You can use the following steps to fix a much smaller repair of drywall that does not penetrate the drywall.
Using the end of a six-inch drywall knife, gently push the patch into and around the injured area to create a small depression. Be sure to pull in the damaged plaster and the surrounding plasterboard.
Use the metal blade on a six-inch drywall as a ruler, making sure that the entire damaged area is slightly recessed relative to the surrounding drywall. If any part of the damaged plasterboard falls on the knife, cut the paper or plaster deeper.
Fill the dent with fast-curing plaster or putty and scrape it evenly with the plaster surface. Let the patch dry and check if it shrinks. If the clay from the gypsum boards has shrunk, apply a second layer and break it again at the same level as the surrounding gypsum board. Two coats are usually enough for small dents, but if you notice any depressions, continue until the patch is smooth and even.

The advantage of putty for much smaller repairs of plasterboard is that it dries very quickly and does not shrink when it solidifies. Spackle is good for these types of small repairs, but not for larger parts. When gypsum tape is needed to give strength to the repair, gypsum board clay should be used.
When the patch is completely dry, lightly sand the area with a sponge or 150 grit sandpaper. You can check for any defects by illuminating a strong halogen light on the surface. Before painting, it is better to check for tool marks or pimples, because after painting, these imperfections will be more difficult to remove.
Use a quality primer to seal the new plasterboard. Finally, paint the repair with a good quality paint that has been mixed to match the existing paint.
