Apple recently released some new earbuds. They’re “new” in the sense that they came out last week, but old in every other way. The cable ends in a Lightning connector instead of a headphone jack. I bet the old model isn’t long for this world, but luckily the new model is the same price at $29.

My old EarPods had seen some serious action, so I thought, “Why not get some new ones? They are cheap and my Apple Store has some in stock.” I bet your Saturdays are as exciting as mine.

The Lightning earbuds aren’t housed in a hard plastic case like the older model. Instead, they come in a recyclable cardboard box. The box has some small tabs that I like, but it has a classic Apple design.

Earpods Met Mini Jack Aansluiting

I plugged the EarPods into the lightning port on my iPhone 6 Plus…immediately asked to update to iOS 10. My other Lightning headphones, the Sony MDR-1A DAC, work well with Lightning EarPods on older versions of iOS. They require iOS 10. For some reason.

A few weeks ago, when the iPhone had a headphone jack, audio was delivered through a multistage chain. Your digital file first hits the DAC (digital-to-analog converter) chip in the phone, where it’s converted from ones and zeros to analog sound waves. Apple has always used high-quality DAC components, but limited the playback rate to 48kHz, preventing hi-res audio compatibility.

The audio then goes to an analog signal amplifier, which pushes the audio through the headphone jack and powers your connected headphones. Apple’s amplifiers have never been studio quality or anything like that, but they are capable of driving very small headphones and in-ear monitors.

Many have written articles about removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, but the DAC and amplifier are also removed. The iPhone 7 cannot deliver analog sound at all. It can send digital audio data via Bluetooth or the Lightning port, but you still need a DAC and amplifier to play that audio through your headphones. Now these accessories should be in your headset or dongle.

With these new Lightning(TM) earbuds, I’m pretty sure the DAC and amplifiers are housed inside the plastic attached to the lightning plug. It’s a thicker and longer piece of plastic than a standard lightning connector, and it’s a bit heavier. I’m not going to rip the plug to find out, but the placement of the components is a very smart decision. Most Bluetooth/Lightning headphones to date have housed the DAC and amplifier inside the ear cups or in a control button unit on the cable.

Both options add extra weight to your head, so it’s wiser to add weight to the plug in your pocket. I bet the new lightning and headphone jack dongle uses the same thick lightning plug to hide the audio hardware.

Similar to the old ones in design and basic functionality. They fit my ears well, but they’re not for everyone. Countless vents are still in the same places. The sound is still heavily biased towards the mid-treble and although they are not completely bass free… they are more prone to hiss than noise. They’re great for podcasts, acoustic music, and female vocals, but they’ll do just about anything. They have a wider soundstage than regular earphones.

The stem is a bit prettier than the old one. Volume is handled differently, with a slightly louder output than older earbuds. This could be due to a new DAC/amplifier or a sensitive system. In a side-by-side comparison, it’s basically impossible to tell the difference in sound. A high quality DAC/amplifier is used just like the old phones.

However. Keeping audio in the phone’s digital domain allows for all sorts of things that Apple hasn’t done before. You can use cool DSP (Digital Signal Processing) effects to add virtual surround sound for movies, simulated room characteristics for listening to music, and other fun custom sound effects beyond simple EQ settings. Do any of these? not yet! And maybe never.

Unlock iOS sample rate limits, allowing higher resolution audio playback and support for more audio formats. Do they now? No!

The Sony MDR-1A DAC incorporates Sony’s S-Master HX digital amplifier, where amplification is performed primarily in DAC hardware rather than an analog amplifier, and subtle DSP effects are used to smooth and “high-res” the audio up to 192kHz. True, they are

For $29, the Apple EarPods with Lightning Connector (gosh, what a crazy, long name) can replace your old EarPods. They carry all the features of the old model, but with a different plug. They don’t add extra weight to your ears when you wear them. They work fine, but require iOS 10. Would you recommend non-iPhone 7 owners to buy them? If you’re happy with your current earbuds, probably not. But if your current ones are as old and ratty as mine, you have nothing to lose by getting them.
