Working as a hardware technician, I’ve often met ambitious DIY users who watch a video or two on how to fix their phone and want to give it a try. Often they fail miserably, further damaging your phone (and wallet) in the process.
To make sure this doesn’t happen, I’ll look back on when I first did my repairs and share some tips and habits I’ve developed to ensure a successful repair.

Opening and working with electronics worth hundreds of dollars is a task we wouldn’t recommend unless you have some experience, so take it at your own risk. And don’t forget to always back up your phone before working on it.

Have a good, clean space to work with with minimal disruption. An uncarpeted room would be very ideal, but it wouldn’t break the deal. Be careful and minimize static electricity. Don’t rub your feet on the carpet before getting ready to turn on your phone. I’ve always gotten into the habit of banging my steel table legs to discharge static before starting work.
When it comes to parts and tools, do your research and find the best parts you can afford. A high-quality screen like the Samsung Galaxy S7, for example, can be expensive, but to save a few bucks, you’d be better off choosing a cheaper, possibly flawed screen.
A basic tool consisting of a screwdriver and a plastic spudger is usually included with the purchase, but this is not always the case. The quality may be cheaper if included, but it gets the job done. If you plan to open your phone (or someone else’s phone) more than a few times, it’s worth investing in a high-quality repair tool. There are some MacGyver solutions that work well if you don’t have the tool, but I’ll cover them in a later article.
There are some really cool sites with full videos and illustrations of popular phones that you should check out before trying anything. For the most part, we recommend iFixit because the iFixit site has plenty of explanations and explanations for everything from replacing a broken screen to replacing your phone’s ear speakers.
How To Fix A Cracked Phone Screen
Before attempting a repair, check this guide to make sure you’re happy with it, then grab that spudger and review it over and over again until you’re confident enough to start walking away. Remember, being a pro doesn’t make you a pro just because it looks easy.
If you decide to perform a task, turn off the device you are working on before you begin. Disassemble the phone, replace the damaged part, and test it if possible. You don’t want to go through the trouble of carefully rebuilding your device just to find out that the part you have is defective. The Samsung Galaxy s5 is a good example of how easy it is to work in this way. It is very easy to put the new LCD assembly in place and test it before final reassembly.
If you think about it, it’s an old Navy Seal motto that can be applied to anything. Bottom line, take your time! Don’t rush repairs because you’re on your way to disaster in a hurry.
If you run into a wall and are disappointed, step away. Don’t underestimate the power of taking a break. It’s often surprising how well repairs go when you get back to a clean head.
How To Replace A Broken Iphone Screen
Go easily by phone. It’s not an AK-47 that can hit a lot. If the pieces do not fit properly, do not force them into place. Take a step back and check the ear speaker for anything out of place, such as a magnetized loose screw. Do not overtighten the screws. It can easily damage other parts or fall and become pinched.
Tracking the screw is also very important and must be returned to its original position. Putting the wrong screws in the wrong place can cause damage. A good example is the LCD/top screws on the iPhone 5 series. Tightening a slightly longer screw in the bottom corner where the shorter screw belongs can cause blue screen and boot issues.
Before turning off the phone, make sure all parts are properly installed and/or screwed in. After reinstalling, do a quick test and see if everything works. You want to test all important functions, not just the part you are replacing, because you may accidentally break something or that part will not work properly with another part. Here is a short list.
After making sure everything is working, sit back and breathe a sigh of relief. Then you should clean it right after you work, especially if you’ve been working on a device with a broken screen. Glass shards are never fun.
