You know we love polished marble countertops, but unfortunately they get dirty from time to time. I had some stains earlier this month and thought this would be a great opportunity to share Garrett’s super simple homemade poultice recipe with you. This DIY poultice is a very effective stain remover that sits on the marble overnight. And even better, it’s made with basic household materials you probably already have at home. Let’s get into it…
How To Remove Stains From Marble Sink
Before making a poultice, wash the counter with soap and water. Unfortunately, the spots we found earlier in the month didn’t show up, so we switched to poultice. Here’s a close-up of one of the stains – this one was stubborn and required the use of hydrogen peroxide (we’ll explain that in a second).

*If the stain is visible on the counter, try this method first on an inconspicuous spot to make sure you like the results (like the bottom or a hidden corner).
Garrett created a short video showing how to make and use the poultice. We are also sharing the steps with the photos below.
Mix 1 heaping tablespoon of baking soda and about 1 teaspoon of water (probably add more at first) and mix. The poultice mixture should have a smooth, thick, icing-like consistency. If yours isn’t yet, add a little more water and mix. Go slowly with this step – remember you can always add more liquid, but you can’t take it away. Keep mixing and adding water until you get the right consistency.
In the morning the poultice will be dry and flaky. Remove it from the counter (we used a cake scraper for this step) and then wash the area with soap and water.
How To Remove Hard Water Stains From Marble
If the stain is still there, you have two options. Mix up another batch of poultice and let it sit longer (maybe 2-3 nights) OR add hydrogen peroxide to your poultice for extra whitening. Let’s look at the hydrogen peroxide option…
Make a second poultice, this time replacing the water with hydrogen peroxide (which has bleaching properties). Reapply the poultice to the stain and leave it overnight to heal. Wipe it down in the morning, wash the counters and hopefully you won’t see any sign of that old stain.
One thing to keep in mind is that this poultice can remove the sealer from your marble along with the stain, so you may need to reapply the sealer to the area where the poultice sat. Your marble may also appear wet for about 24 hours. Over the years, hard water rings have formed around my faucet and soap dish in my kitchen sink. I’ve always been wary of using harsh products or vinegar to remove these stains since my countertops are made of dolomite. My in-laws got me a handheld vaporizer for Christmas and I was so excited to try it out on these parts. I think you’ve grown up when you not only ask for a steamer for Christmas, but it’s actually your favorite gift. Well it worked! The hard water rings are gone and there is no damage to my beautiful dolomite countertops. I used the same method on my faucets in my bathroom. I’ve had my dolomite countertops for five years and other than these hard water stains they look like new.
