While scams do happen on Craigslist and there are stolen bikes for sale, it’s important to note that the vast majority of listings will be legitimate sellers who just want to sell their current bikes so they can upgrade to newer ones.

Once you’re on the Craigslist website, there are several features you can use to conduct an accurate search. Once you’ve selected your region/location and started searching for your bike, you can narrow down the results by year.

For example, a search for “Yamaha R6” will return 77 pages of results, while adding in the model year, 2009, will return a total of four entries.
If it is not explicitly stated in the ad and anyone who advertises well will include this information then you can contact the owner and ask. If possible, you want to ask for a picture of the odometer. this gives you a correct answer that you can verify.
Bad answer: “It’s been sitting in the garage for a few years. I haven’t driven it.” Or, “It’s broken. X, Y, Z, it doesn’t work.”
I personally keep a running Excel list of the dates I serviced the bike and what happened to it and whether the shop did it or me. I also try to keep receipts for shop repairs. It shows that the bike has been maintained and cared for. Of course you can’t expect everyone to do this and give you a maintenance log, but they should be able to tell you when the chain was last cleaned and oiled, when the oil was changed, when the tires were changed, brake fluid and so on henceforth.

If you argue for a lower price, you can use it as a little leverage, although be prepared to look for mechanical damage to the bike. Often in minor accidents or if the bike is dropped in a parking lot, the only things that get damaged are the bike’s fairings or turn signals. Depending on the model, they can range from $100 to $1,000 to buy new, so look for the appropriate price reduction. You can’t expect to get a $500 price cut because one of the turn signals is scratched. For example, a set of new fairings for the 2009 Yamaha R6 sample we used can cost anywhere from $250 to $350 on eBay.
Be sure to ask about the inspection status if it is not listed. You may want to take the bike with the owner to a nearby shop to have it inspected in front of you, but be prepared to cover the cost of the inspection, which is generally nominal.
It’s up to the seller to agree to let you take a test ride and set the terms of the test ride, such as a written agreement that if damage occurs during the test ride, the rider will buy the bike or pay for the damage. But in the end, you want to be able to at least feel the bike (while it’s cold and not started is ideal).
This is pretty self-explanatory. You don’t want to buy a bike that the seller doesn’t actually own or that has been stolen. There are very few exceptions for which one would not have a title.

That said, if you’re sure you want to buy the bike, you can arrange with the seller to hold it for you for a few more days while you get a plan from an insurance company.
