Now that we are used to these electric trucks, electric trucks will be the next big change for light commercial vehicles. They took a big step forward with the introduction of the Ford F-150 Lightning, which received an official driving range higher than expected and received praise in the US.
Sensing an opportunity, Volkswagen Group has now confirmed plans to enter the electric pickup market, reviving the defunct Scout brand in the process. However, Chinese brand Maxus, which has been making big strides of late, could steal the pair as its T90 EV is the first electric truck to reach these shores.

Electric pickups take longer to sell than electrifying a truck. Current four-wheel drive (4×4) systems are mostly on-road, and the weight of batteries in the UK may be a cause for concern.
As a result, many new brands are entering the electric pickup market, using revolutionary ‘skateboard’ style chassis designs that place all components, including the pickup body, on a platform with different bodies on top.
Almost all of these are based in the US – and although there are some Chinese electric trucks, most of them won’t be coming to the UK anytime soon. Or never.
Generating zero emissions while driving – which is important for air quality – electric vehicles have plenty of torque, the muscle that makes the bar move. Most of the following electric carriers take advantage of this to provide greater efficiency and capacity.
Why Is Everyone Building An Electric Pickup Truck?
Electric motors are much quieter than conventional diesel and gasoline engines, improving refinement. They are generally less expensive to operate and cheaper to service.
However, more than that, electric energy storage gives manufacturers the opportunity to rethink traditional design ideas – and you can see some examples of this below.
Weight can be an issue – although the UK has a special regulation for alternative fuel light commercial vehicles, for this reason the maximum permitted curb weight is 4,250 kg (4,25 tonnes), which only applies in certain circumstances.
Additionally, the 1,000kg (1.0-tonne) load rating required by UK light commercial vehicle tax rules for pick-ups may be even harder for the pickup we see here. Batteries are heavy, so it takes a lot of weight,

Additionally, there are driving rules and charging issues that face all electric vehicles. Some complex engineering solutions may also be required. That doesn’t help electric pickup prices — which are already higher than diesel models.
Rivian may not be a household name, but the California-based electric vehicle company has major backers including Amazon and Ford. Its new all-electric pickup, the Rivian R1T, was used as a support vehicle in the TV show ‘Long Way Up’ alongside electric motorcycles driven by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. That’s the real deal.
Now on sale in the US for $67,500 (around £50,000), the R1T range will eventually include models offering a driving range of 250 to 400 miles per charge. The headline spec uses quad motor technology – four motors, one for each wheel – delivering 750hp and 1,120Nm and 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.
Towing capacity is said to be close to 5,000 kg (5.0 tonnes), and the traditional cargo bed, Rivian electric truck has ground storage and ‘gear tunnels’ – including a self-contained camp kitchen – behind the cab.
Nikola Teases An Electric Pickup With 600 Miles Of Range
You may not have heard of Radar but you have heard of Keeley. Several brands own it, including Chinese company Volvo, and it looks like it will introduce another with this new electric truck.
There are few details on it at the moment, but it won’t be long until it goes on sale – deliveries in China will start in late summer/autumn 2022, according to a Geely spokesperson.
Coming to England? The chances of it coming to the UK are slim, as Geely isn’t here yet, so the chances of a new brand coming out with a fully electric truck aren’t particularly high.
Rounding out the American truck lineup is the Maxus T90 EV, an all-electric version of the regular Maxus T90 you can already buy. If you live in China. Both versions hit the market in 2021, with the non-electric version powered by a twin-turbo diesel with up to 215 hp.
Chinese Electric Pickup Truck From Sany Group Revealed On Patents
You won’t get much power from the electric model, which uses a single 130kW (177hp) electric motor. As you’d imagine, it won’t offer the performance of some flagship trucks here, but with a crammed 88.55kWh pack, it should be good for a WLTP-approved range of 198 miles – and unfortunately that’s about town. Where it is.
Expect the overall average rating to be a bit lower but the T90 has some interesting extras like fast charging in 45 minutes. Given the competitive nature of the Maxus van, expect it to be quite expensive.
There are some downsides though – it’s rear-wheel drive only, which is good for the track but poor for handling, and it only has a 740kg payload, meaning it doesn’t qualify for commercial vehicle tax status. A version will make its official UK debut at the 2022 CV Show.
Coming to England? It is recognized that it is doing this faster than expected. Orders will open in August 2022, before deliveries begin in early 2023.

The Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle of any kind in America, and has been for decades. It is a larger pickup than the UK-available Ford Ranger and in many ways Ford’s flagship model. No wonder Oval Blue is launching a 100% electric version.
Called the Ford F-150 Lightning, it’s a twin-engine 4×4 with 563 hp and 1,051 Nm – more torque than the previous F-150. There are two battery options, and 150kW fast charging. The official driving range is now reported to be 230 or 320 miles per charge.
However, more than this, it can charge electricity – not just for devices, but for the whole house. for three days. Payload is as low as 907kg, but it can tow up to 4,536kg – and it costs just $39,974 (about £28,000 now). A real game changer.
Coming to England? Sure thing; The F-150 was specially imported but generally considered too big for UK roads.

Hummer, as you may recall, is a defunct all-American SUV brand that was originally spun off from the Humvee military vehicle. Now the Hummer name has been revamped as an all-electric brand by parent company GMC.
There will be an SUV and a pickup – the Sport Utility Truck called the SUT. The macho look is updated but familiar, and better performance is expected on offer. GMC claims 625-1,000 hp and 16,000 Nm of torque (which is sometimes surprisingly measured for electric vehicles). The result: 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
The official starting driving range is 329 miles on a single charge, with other unusual features including a low-speed diagonal ‘grabwalk’ driving mode and air suspension that can increase ground clearance by six inches. Prices range from $79,995-$112,595 (around £58,000-£81,100).
Another name you may not have heard of and yet another American electrical startup brand. It is at once more moderate and extreme than many of the others – and despite its relative obscurity. The Endurance is now available for pre-order in the US, with prices starting at $52,500 (around £38,000).
Automakers Make The Case For Electric Pickup Trucks
Claimed to have the fewest moving parts of any motor vehicle, it uses four ‘in-box’ electric motors, mounted inside the wheels. In addition to making a 4×4 electric truck, each wheel can be driven independently. They deliver 600 hp and more than 2,700 Nm of continuous torque – which peaks at 6,000 Nm.
Towing capacity is rated at 3,400 kg (slightly less than current diesel pickups). Driving range is about 250 miles per charge. However, Lordstown Motors Corporation has run into difficulties, and production estimates have recently dropped from 32,000 examples to just 500 in 2022.
