I recently received an email from a reader who had a question about a stolen home. The reader wanted to know if a stronger lock could be purchased for the exploding front door. They sent me some photos and allowed me to use them on my blog.
When the theft was first told to me, I assumed the bolt of the lock was bent at a 45-degree angle, allowing the thieves to break in. I’ve seen this before on cheaper locks where the latch doesn’t just bend but pops completely out of the door. However, when I saw the photo of the door lock, it was clear to me that the theft was the result of the door completely malfunctioning. The door cracked under the pressure, allowing the latch to bend at a 45-degree angle.

This can be avoided by installing a round plate with a latch lock. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend a wrap with this door. The door looks solid enough on its own, and the wrapping plate on the front door of the house might not look so good. But in this case I would be wrong. The door looked solid, but in reality there were only layers of synthetic material simulating a wooden door.

The wrapping plate was first introduced by the MAG manufacturing company in the 1970s. MAG has recently closed down and the only company I know of producing wrapping sheets is Don-Jo Manufacturing Co. Don-Jo manufactures a wide variety of wrap-around panels for any door thickness, backsplash and desired color combination.
A wrap-around sheet is an inexpensive way to fix a broken door. The plate holds the door together and the new lock is attached to the plate. Blank plates can be purchased to cover where the lock used to be, as well as larger plates containing the button and latch.
In New Jersey, where I started as a locksmith, many doors between the garage and home were thin 1 3/8 inches thick. The wrap plate was necessary when installing a latch on thin doors because the latch required a 1-inch hole drilled from the center edge of the door. 1 3/8 inches minus 1 inch leaves 3/16 inches on either side of the lock bolt. The wrapping plate (we were using MAG brand plates in those days) made the weak door much stronger and allowed the latch to secure the door and abuse it from thieves.
