The Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program, a 60-hour program, is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and meets the educational requirements for licensure as a professional counselor in Tennessee and many other states. Our program is offered face-to-face in Knoxville, TN. Most students study full-time; Part-time options are available upon consultation. Most courses are offered during the day, Monday through Thursday.
The program prepares professionals to use strong professional personality and communication skills in a variety of settings, including community agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private practice. Our program focuses on working with at-risk children and youth. Throughout our program, we strive to embrace our core values—Preservation, Humility, Openness, Respect, Unity, and Self-Awareness—and engage in culturally sensitive, appropriate and ethical development.

Steps To Become A Certified Mental Health Counselor
The application window to start the program is closed in 2022. From 2023, all Master’s students will only start studying in the Summer (June) semester. The application deadline is December 1, 2022.

CMHC students complete a one-semester, 100-hour practicum in a clinical mental health counseling setting. During the internship, students focus on developing mentoring relationships. This work is strictly monitored on site and on campus.
After graduation, CMHC students complete 900 internship hours per calendar year. During the internship, students focus on developing mentoring relationships and assume the responsibilities of entry-level professional mentors. As in practice, this work is closely monitored both on campus and on site.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling

All 50 states require a license to work as a professional counselor. These licensure requirements typically have three ESs: education, exam, and experience (2,000-4,000 supervised hours after graduation). You can learn more on the American Counseling Association’s licensing requirements page.
Our CMHC program is designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a licensed licensed mental health service provider (LPC-MHSP) counselor in Tennessee. Additionally, accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) provides an easy path to licensure in many other states. If you plan to intercede in a state other than Tennessee, a faculty advisor can make adjustments to meet educational requirements.
As a CACREP accredited program, our program can offer a fast track to the National Certified Counselor Certification offered by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).
Fastest Way To Become A Licensed Counselor Or Therapist?
Students accepted into the Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling programs have the opportunity to complete dual licensure preparation requirements. Completed courses will provide the student with a structured method to meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC) and Professional School Counselor in Tennessee. Preparation for the dual license requires only 63 hours. Faculty permission and application are required, and students must declare their intention in the first semester in their program. Faculty will recognize all submitted applications and notify students by the end of the fall semester. Eligible students remain in their registered program (i.e., school or clinical mental health), but agree and are required to complete dual licensure preparation requirements.
The Counseling Education Clinic provides students with access to free individual and group counseling and focuses on helping students achieve a greater sense of well-being. Students collaborate with counselors to create and achieve personal goals to enhance their physical, mental and emotional well-being.

As with similar fields of study, people who intend to become school counselors will need a solid academic background. Your first step is to decide where you want to go to college and apply. Depending on your current level of education, this may mean applying for a bachelor’s or master’s program. Although your undergraduate degree usually does not need to be in education or counseling, it is often helpful to choose a major that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the theories and practices needed for counseling. Students majoring in subjects such as psychology, sociology, or counseling may find that they get a feel for the work involved in school counseling and are also well prepared for their graduate studies.
Depending on your program, earning a master’s degree means learning counseling and guidance techniques for many age groups and skill levels. During this process, which can take 1-2 years, you can explore areas of expertise such as K-12 education, education for children with behavioral problems or developmental delays. according to

You can do an internship or complete an internship as part of your course requirements during or after your degree program. If you decide to pursue this course, many programs require a number of these hours to be completed, either as a graduation requirement or as part of future doctoral studies. For example, a school counselor program may require 100 practicum hours, 40 of which are in direct contact with K-12 students. Additionally, you must complete hundreds of hours of practicum or internship work to pass the licensing exam to become a school counselor.

During an internship or school counseling practicum, you’ll get hands-on experience in the field, usually at your chosen school location. You will perform most of your field-related duties under the direct supervision of both your local supervisor and your campus instructor or supervisor. Once you’ve completed the training requirements and hours of work, it’s time to become a certified school counselor. You should first know your state’s requirements, as they vary. The National Counselor Exam (NCE) is a 200-point exam that you can take because it is required for licensure in most states. It may also be required for a national license or a potential military job you are interested in. The NCE website lists all the requirements for the exam and provides information on where to take the exam in your state. It is a good idea to study and prepare for this exam as you would for any other important, long-term exam. Most schools prefer that you have a year or two of hands-on experience before they hire you. You may also need to obtain a teaching certificate or license. Research your state’s teaching certification requirements, as these can vary by education system. Alternatively, you can pursue majors such as career counseling or an emphasis on students with addictions.
