And if it fails, it usually only happens on some bad tiles (out of the original 34). You can replace the single cell yourself with a well-tested used cell for 40. Or use only the services of hybrid battery rebuilders.
I can’t believe anyone’s battery has changed in this forum. There is also an 8-year, 100,000-mile warranty. If it is less than 100,000 miles, the first ES Hybrid will not be out of warranty until 2021.

If there is not enough total voltage in the battery pack, the vehicle will not run. It will throw away all kinds of errors. I don’t think the car can run with a bad package.
I have never owned a hybrid and I know very little about driving, but I have a question. If the car can’t start when the hybrid battery dies, do you get any indication / warning that the hybrid battery is dying before it dies, or that it dies without warning and cause?
One way to check battery health is to run an OBD monitoring app like Torque. You can see the voltage, the resistance of each cell, a bunch of other OBD parameters. If there is too much variation between cells, this may be a sign of a failed package.

I just got my ES 300h 2013. I thought it would work like the 2008 model GS450h when the hybrid battery pack failed.
When I had a problem with the hybrid battery pack on the GS450h, the message was just check the hybrid system, replace the hybrid battery ….. so the car was still driveable but there was no regenerative braking and no hybrid support.
The second time the same thing happened I was using the OBD 2 reader to reset the error in the hybrid and the car was still running for a few days. No, we have about 560 000 km … Yes, this is not a 560 000 km typo. The components are very good.

So now I wonder if the same LIMP mode is available in 6th Gen ES 300 h 2013 when the battery fails ?? Some YouTube videos showed that the ES 300h does not start but in another video the same person has to remove the negative battery lead from the 12 volt battery in the trunk and leave it on for a minute and the car will start. Drive but not hybrid support.
(Or remove the battery terminal from the 12-volt battery for 2 minutes, instead of reconnecting it) and the motor will restart and run for a few weeks until you find a replacement hybrid battery pack or some hybrid cells you want to replace.
