If you pay off your current student loans regularly, refinancing can be a good move. Refinancing can simplify your payments by combining your private and federal student loans into a single loan, giving you a lower interest rate, reducing your monthly payment, helping you repay loans faster, or eliminating the signer. But where should we go to find the best conditions? LendKey and SoFi associate student loan takeouts with refinancing options. Here’s a look at the two companies and the range of student loan refinancing services offered by each.
LendKey’s mission is to enable “more than 13,000 financial institutions across the country to engage and succeed in online lending.” Credit unions and community banks offer some of the most credit-friendly student loans, but rarely have the infrastructure to expand their marketing, operations, and technical support to reach a wide variety of borrowers. Borrowers want to find the lowest interest rates, but getting information about loans and contacting several banks is cumbersome and time consuming. For efficiency reasons, many borrowers overpay, or some of the largest private student loan providers in the country treat them like a number.

SoFi also provides refinancing of student loans, but instead of consolidating borrowers with traditional lenders, SoFi offers a platform for bulk buying or mutual lending. SoFi was founded by a group of Stanford business students who wanted to help other students. Several alumni have invested in the program, and the funds have been used to help recent graduates lower interest rates on student loans. Although the program began at Stanford, it soon spread to other schools and eventually became a state program.

Both LendKey and SoFi offer unique options for refinancing student loans. Most of the features of each of these platforms are pretty comparable, but SoFi really stands out in career services. SoFi uses career trainers to help clients find jobs, interview and pay bargain fees. Coaching services are delivered one-on-one or through an online seminar. And since finding a job often depends more on who you know than what you know, SoFi organizes happy hours, dinners, and networking events around the country to help borrowers and graduates make professional connections. They also offer an entrepreneurship program for borrowers who want to start their own business.
If you have a stable career, excellent creditworthiness, and other desirable characteristics of a borrower, you can get slightly lower interest rates through LendKey. If you like the idea of career services, entrepreneurial resources, and networking from your lender, SoFi may be more appealing. Since neither charge an application fee, it may be worth considering both to find the right option to refinance a student loan for you. A white circle with a black border surrounding the top.
