Okay, winter break is here and I have some money to spend and some time between my two jobs. so let’s start by saying i’m tired of that s**ty truck in the friend group. They all have sidewalks and people look at their truck like it’s the most amazing thing and you know what, I want people (girls) to look at mt’s truck like that. Lol, let’s get started. This is where I started the control panel.

We cut everything out and I put a two tone rust converter on it. It seems to have worked very well, changed to black as it says anyway. My next plan was to use bubble foam to fill in the old swing panels and, for lack of a better job, provide a good work surface and shape for the swing to fit.

Well, I need to figure out a better way to contain the expanding foam in the rocker panel, because surprise…gravity still works here in Topeka. If you decipher it to do as I did, do not touch the foam with bare skin. A huge ball fell out, I grabbed it and tried to push it back into the board. Not only did it not work, but my hands are very sticky and I have to scrub forever to get it off. My experience was crap because I had to poop while trying to take it off. It’s not as funny as it sounds, at least while it was happening. It was pretty funny back then. Then I got off to the side and started working on the hood to get it ready for the bedding while my failed attempt at foam dried.

Glass wool. The problem with the new panels is the rust is deeper than the cabin panels and all, so I cut what I can, turn the rust I can’t cut and then glass the new panels. I have a welder, the problem is that I have school and two jobs, and the welder is only for 7-3 people and I rarely have free time, so I decided to use glass

If the rust is that bad, consider selling it and look for something stainless. I just know from experience that covering up rust doesn’t work. Good luck

If it comes back it will come back but right now I can’t afford new rockers and sheet metal to replace the cab where it rusted. I just want to stop what I know and make it beautiful. And it took 17 years for it to be as bad as mine, if I had another 5 years I would be very happy with what I did

How To Fix A Rust Hole In A Rocker Panel (fast, Low Cost Method)

The folding arms must not be locked. There are weep holes at the bottom, as well as a door. This is why “mud like rolled paint” destroys a truck. Condensation occurs when two pieces of metal form a cavity and the moisture must escape or it will rust. You and I had/have rusted rocker arms because the previous owners didn’t keep the bottom of the truck clean. Great Stuff foam absorbs moisture. When you deal with “good” metal in your truck, it causes rust in places you can’t see until it’s too late.

Treat the inner surface of the folding surface from rust. Get some tin or some good fins from the junkyard. I hate to recommend them, but http://alfaparts.net/toyotapu90.htm has them for $50.

You can use rivets or 3M auto cement to hold them in place if you don’t have someone to weld them. Leave a place where moisture can escape. If you still insist on repairing the fiberglass, dig out the Great Stuff and bend some metal window guards to accept the fiberglass mat. When you finish the Bondo, it must be smaller than a penny or it will crack. Good luck.

Some would argue that my truck is actually a pretty big POS based on the amount of damage to the body and some other things that weren’t done “right” (the bedding being one of them). It doesn’t look like anything, especially to those who don’t know what they’re looking at.

However, I don’t care what they say or think. The truck runs and does everything I want it to, including getting to and from where I want it to go.

One thing you might want to do instead of going the way you started… Have you thought about making swing panels out of heavy duty rectangular or tubular steel and turning them into a slide? You could probably pick up scrap steel from your metal shop for less than $100. Remove the rust from the inside of the rocker arm and paint it with POR15, plug the ends of the steel, weld it to the body and some legs to the frame.

I didn’t think about the screen. What you say makes sense about water retention and what not. I cut holes and dug out the foam because it didn’t work the way I thought it would anyway

As for the slider, that sounds like a good idea, but I just thought it was a bad idea because it doesn’t bend the cab unlike the frame and cause cracking. I’m not saying you’re wrong, you’re just wondering

Rocker Panel Rust Hole, Repair Ideas? [pics]

The hood has been sanded before, I talked to my boss and he is going to help me spray the truck to make it look better than rolling.

If you really want to, fill the hole with pool dough and foam. At least pool noodles don’t hold water. Most dollar stores will still have some in the back. I think it says wear gloves on the box for the big stuff. Somehow this classic thread reminds me of the Explorer forum:

Winter time, which means winter shooting time. I would like some insight on how to fix minor scale rust. I know there are a lot of posts/youtube videos and what not about changing rocker panels to new ones or rock sliders. These are usually on rockers that are completely rusted and almost gone. I don’t have mine yet. I’m just trying to stop the cancer…

I’m not a big guy. Look at the pictures. do you have any suggestions on the best way to handle this? does the rust come from the inside of the rocker arm and come out or vice versa? Can I sand and paint? or should it be cut out and filled with body filler? Let me know if there is anything written about this.

You won’t know the extent of the rust until you start removing the paint and rust. Be prepared for some perforations. If the holes are small, a basic fiberglass repair can be successful. But you’ll need some basic body skills to look good. Good news….. Rockers is a place where if it’s not perfect, it’s hard to tell. Explore and learn his techniques here. It’s an art.

I almost want to say that someone has already done some work. Is this too much spray on the seam? I have never done body work in years. I had surface rust issues on an ’00 that I bought cheap. Orlo is right that it is art. He tried to do things right. He did the research. Watched a few videos. He used rattles. The point is, I smoked. My boyfriend says I can’t touch rattle boxes anymore. It will probably be professionally done in the spring. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t be.

You can either patch it and not worry about it, or if you want it to look unrepaired, you’ll need to cut out the rusted metal and bend the patch to fit the size of the hole. it is best to cut a nice square hole.

Fixing Minor Rocker Panel Rust

Then you have to weld a new patch. It’s not that hard to bend it to fit. it just takes a little skill and patience. you just want to repeat the existing curves. you can make a makeshift metal turning brake using a vise and a square.

The only way to stop rust is to cut off the affected metal. Weld it in place and repaint as
