A flat tire on your bike feels like your luck is running out, howling into the ether as you roll and stand. Paying someone to fix it is a worse fate. You go out of your way and probably pay for a better deal than you should and put a new $7 tube on your bike.
If you want, you can repair your flat tire yourself. It’s not as scary as a car tire because your bike weighs less than a ton and its tools fit in the palm of your hand. Ask me, the man who can’t change the oil, who once hit a bulb while trying to change a bulb and the driver’s side mirror is still covered in glue.

How To Change A Bike Tire
A flat tire. It’s the work you do most with your hands, and it’s a good, touching feeling when the final pieces are placed. Here’s how to prepare for this amazing day.

Replacement tube for your special wheel and tire. The sidewall of your tire should be printed with its size. Most newer wheels are metric (“700c x 25”), while older and specialty wheels are king (“27 x 1.25”). If you’re not sure what size you need, check your owner’s manual, Google your bike model, or stop by your bike shop and ask for help buying a few inner tubes.
Tires. Wirecutter recommends Pedro’s Tire Levers and so do I. Some tubes and patches come with free levers and are usually good enough as long as you don’t do any other work on the bike. Donor. Once the tire is off and the tube is out, you’ll need a way to get air into the new tube. You can buy adapters for CO2 cartridges, or at most one if you have room. If you go this route, buy more than one cartridge so you can practice (ask the guy who blew the entire cartridge the first time he tried it while his partners looked on in despair). A reliable and sustainable solution is a hand pump, such as the Lezyne model recommended by Wirecutter. Put it on your bike or throw it in your purse if you can.
A dollar or two. If your tire has a bad or flat hole, a dollar placed between the tube and the tire gap could be the solution to stopping the gap so you can get where you’re going. Otherwise, having one or two bulls in the bag means you can take the bus or wheelbarrow home while others fail.
Remove the wheel. It’s easier to remove the front wheel than the rear, and it’s much easier if you have brakes that push against the edge of the wheel (ie side brakes) instead of the latest disc brakes. But you can do it anyway:

Remove the tire. Start with step 4 of our tube replacement guide. Deflate the tire by pushing the lug into the trunk. Insert the end of the tire lever (or quick release lever) between the rim and the edge of the tire, then the tire lever from the rim. If you are using a tire lever, there should be a notch or hook on the other side that can be attached to one of your spokes and the other end placed inside the tire. Either way, rotate the tire lever around the wheel, removing the tire from the rim as you go. Once one side is released, the other side should come out of your hands.

Use your fingers as a bad guide, compare the tension against your touch with the other tire and make the mistake of not getting too much air in and out of the other tube.

If you are going to use a hand or rack pump, push the wheel in (rotate the steps to remove it), then tighten it to the maximum on the tire (blown to the side of the tire). If you’re using a hand pump and need to get to work or home, it’s okay to leave a good bit of maximum; it will be hard towards the end. If you are using a CO2 canister, you should stop when your tire feels firm to the touch.
Connect the old pipes. If the cracked pipes have no holes or cracks, you can glue the patch and place it as your new spare parts. Then hook the second lever under the bead next to the first and push it clockwise around the rim until one side of the tire is off. You do not need to completely remove the tire.
After the tire is deflated, remove the old tube (if used) and look for a flat source, which could be a thorn, piece of glass, or other sharp object. Carefully run your fingers into the tire and rim, making sure nothing sharp is left behind; otherwise you risk getting another apartment. Also check the outside of the tire, again for any foreign objects that may still be stuck in the rubber.
