It’s another Thursday. We all love our rides and do everything we can to keep them running smoothly. But what do we do when we see the first signs of rust on a car?
When a car starts to rust, it’s important to repair the damage before it gets worse. Here are three easy steps to repair rusted holes in your car. This will require some work on your part, but it’s worth your time and effort.
Fix Rust Holes
Before starting, it is necessary to remove any existing rust. This may sound daunting, but if the rust persists, the problem will reappear very quickly. A grinder can remove all rust. It may be wise to remove a small amount of paint even around the rust hole. When the rust is gone, continue sanding by hand for a smooth finish. Before proceeding, it is wise to coat the border of the hole with rust remover. It turns rust into iron.
How To Repair A Rust Hole In Your Car
Wearing gloves, a person should cut the fiberglass piece to cover the hole. It is necessary to use as many layers as possible to get a strong finish. For best results, be sure to let each layer dry and sand the layers. When you’re done, it’s wise to apply a thin layer of putty to the fiberglass to fill in any holes. Sanding will create a smooth base.
Apply a primer to give the body its natural color. Then, using an airbrush, apply a coat of the car’s regular paint color. Several coats may be required. During the last coat, the temperature should be high.
The above steps will help one to easily repair rust holes on vehicles. This will keep the car looking good without further damage. There is no need to have them repaired professionally. This is an easy DIY project that doesn’t take much time to complete. It needs to be fixed before winter, my husband doesn’t have the spare time to do it himself; and I don’t want to spend $150-200 in a body shop to have it done.
The first step is to scrape off the loose paint around the rust spot and sand off most of the rust.
Repairing A Rust Hole In A Car
I found that under the outer metal layer what I thought was an extra layer of rusted, chipped metal was actually a dense foam filling. I scraped the rest of the metal pieces from the foam. Then I tape the area and spray rust inhibitor on it.
Following the directions on the can, I let the anti-rust treatment sit overnight before continuing to rust. (Anti-rust treatment cleans up and the black dries up.)
The other day, I sanded around the area again, removing the paint around the holes in preparation for the look. To remove rust and paint, I used 60 grit sandpaper.
At this point, I used a metal mesh patch (Bondo brand) to fill the holes, replace the missing metal, and give the Bondo a place to stick.
How To Repair A Rust Hole On Your Vehicle.
Using normal scissors, I cut the mesh to roughly the right size and started inserting it into the hole between the metal and the foam. Along the bottom, I had to loosen the foam on the metal slightly with a screwdriver. Since this area is curved, I have to shape the patch as I work, and it takes some work to get the last (top left) corner.
The body patch is self-adhesive and has a removable backing. You can see in the photo that it shrunk as I moved the patch into place. As per the instructions, I was supposed to take the patch back, peel off the backing and reapply. But once I reshaped it, it wouldn’t come back, and I decided I didn’t care if there were plastic stickers in there.
It comes in two parts, the body filler putty (grey) and the hardener cream (red), which you mix together and then apply.
The instructions say to use a golf ball-sized amount of putty and a half-inch of hardener. Said to be mixed on a non-porous surface and used within 2-3 minutes.

Some lessons learned: Mix what you can use in 30 seconds. This thing dries so fast that it can’t be used. After the first batch, and trying to clean its non-porous surface, I switched to a half batch mixed on a wax-coated paper plate that I could scoop out.
Because the rust hole is near the ledge under the tank door, part of my repair plan is to do the repair under the plastic rim to protect the repair from gas or water. It made application and sanding a bit difficult, but I am happy with the result. Hopefully the extra work will make the repair last longer.
I used a self-etching, sandable primer and followed the directions on the can. I taped the edges while I was working. Once done, I used 600 grit sandpaper to soften the edges of the primer and roughen the paint around.

Hand sanding takes some extra time, but it gives me extra control. Here you can see that I made sure to line the primer just below the edge of the plastic. I also put tape and newspaper on the bottom (plastic) fender because I didn’t want to scratch the bottom edge of the metal fender when sanding it.
The final stage is painting. The first color I used was incorrect. When looking at this car from a few feet away, it looks like it’s on top of the tank; but once upon a time, it was too light.
Next I went for a darker shade, and when I put the spray cap on the bottom of the car, no sunlight would discolor the color.
2. Do not reverse the direction. Spray around and stop as you go. Spray in the opposite direction, stopping as you go. Reversing the direction will result in slight build-up drips that must be sanded and redone.

3. The paint requires two light coats followed by a wet coat. “Wet coat” does not mean “thick coat”. Thick coatings can cause air bubbles to form. When you’re almost done, here’s how to treat the pain.

It’s a beater and I’m not worried about fixing it “correctly”. Try to spend at least a dollar on this. My main concern is keeping mice or insects out of the car.
