On day 2, I sanded around the area again, removing the paint around the hole in preparation for construction. To remove rust and paint, I used 60 grains of sandpaper.
At this point, I used a metal mask (bondo mark) to fill the holes, replace the missing metal, and give the bondo a place to stick.
Using plain scissors, I cut the net to roughly the right shape and started sticking it into the hole between the metal and the foam. Along the bottom I had to loosen the foam on the metal a bit with a screwdriver. Since this area is curved, I need to shape the patch while working, and getting the last one (top left) requires some work.
