We had a Samsung 32 “LCD TV that was recently fritzed. The television would turn on, then turn itself off immediately, then on again … in an endless cycle. After doing a little research we discovered that there was a recall in this televisions due to the defective capacitor used in manufacturing.

Since I did not want to buy a new TV or pay about $ 150 to repair it, I picked up my trusted soldering iron and went to work. It turns out that you can fix this problem yourself for only $ 3- $ 6 in parts. The only skills needed are some basic soldering and desoldering techniques. How To Fix A Samsung Tv That Won’t Turn On
In almost all cases, this particular problem is caused by one or more capacitors on the power supply board over heating. Finding an overheated capacitor is easy once you get off the television. Take photos as you go in case you need to refer to where things are, especially on the circuit board.
Carefully remove the stand and back of the TV. Make sure you lay a clean and flat surface facing the television, then remove the stand followed by the black screws on the outside of the back of the television. When all screws are removed, the back should be lifted and unscrewed very easily. Do not force it.
The power supply board is on the right side. If you look at the picture of the power supply, you will see a closeup of a burned capacitor. Note that the top is no longer flat, but raised and separate. To remove the power supply board, carefully loosen the two cables running on the board (one on the left and one on the top). Then remove the silver screws at the four corners. There will be an extra screw in the lower left corner of the board where the power cable is inserted. This is noted in the photo. Do yourself a favor and screw the silver screws back into their holes so as not to loosen the screws or wherever they go.
We put the board in the helping hands, mentioning where the bad capacitor is underneath. Then we remove the connections, and delete the part. Do you still remember how the capacitor was mounted? Do you paint? The easy way to remember which side the capacitor is going on is to remember which side the vertical line is on. Make sure the capacitor is mounted properly, we have now soldered to the new capacitor. How do we know which capacitor to buy?
There are three main functions that define a capacitor. First it is capacitance, second it is voltage, and third, it is leads. There may also be a temperature specification. For our capacitor, all we need to specify the correct replacement is the nominal capacitance in micro-Farads (47µF), the operating voltage in volts (160v), and finally, because both wires come out at the bottom, it is a radial capacitor (as opposed to an axial axis snap-in capacitor).
I found ten of these on Amazon for $ 15. That’s $ 1.50 to repair the TV, compared to paying $ 150. I do not mind buying 9 extra capacitors, because one day I will find a use for them.
Replace the power supply board on the TV (are you not glad you did not loosen those screws?), Plug in the two cables again, and then plug in the TV and verify that it works. If not, have you soldered the capacitor in the correct direction (+/-)? Is there more than one capacitor that burned out that you did not get?
